Will Final Fantasy Finally Arrive on Xbox at Tokyo Game Show?

The Tokyo Game Show is approaching, and Microsoft’s Xbox will have a significant presence alongside its rival Sony.

Xbox has announced a broadcast event for September 26, featuring content from its own studios, Activision, Blizzard, and third-party partners from Japan and Asia. The event will also showcase games coming to Xbox Game Pass.

While the specific games remain a mystery, gaming insider Jez Corden from Windows Central believes we might see some Final Fantasy-related announcements.

On the Xbox Two Podcast, Corden suggested that Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy XVI, and the Pixel Remasters might be part of Xbox’s future plans and that we could get some exciting news at the Tokyo Game Show.

“I do think that we are going to get something Final Fantasy related. I’ve heard that the whole slate is on the docket, including Final Fantasy VII, XVI, and Pixel Remasters. A lot of people were wondering, like, ‘Has Sony locked down Final Fantasy VII forever?’ I’ve heard that is not the case, and that Final Fantasy VII will eventually come to Xbox. I don’t know when it will, and I don’t know if it’ll be in the first wave… I do think VII Remake will come to Xbox, but I think at least initially it will be Pixel Remasters and XVI.”

However, Alex Donaldson, editor of VG247, shared a slightly different perspective. According to Donaldson, there is currently no active development for Xbox versions of Final Fantasy VII Remake or Rebirth.

“They will eventually do it, but right now, there’s no active port development,” Donaldson posted on ResetEra.

Donaldson speculated that Square Enix is prioritizing the completion and release of Final Fantasy VII Part 3 before considering Xbox or even a potential Switch 2 version.

“Square Enix’s attitude towards Xbox has softened, and I believe more future titles will come to the platform. However, it takes time for such shifts in strategy to take full effect.”

For Final Fantasy XVI, Donaldson, agreeing with Jez, feels it’s “more obvious and clear-cut,” referencing Yoshida’s comments over the last six months. He said, “It’s clear that will happen sooner rather than later.”

Talk about Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy XIV director, seems very happy about the decision to launch FF14 on Xbox. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, he expressed his gratitude to Xbox head Phil Spencer for making the game’s release on the console a reality. Furthermore, Yoshida talks about plans with Xbox.

“With Final Fantasy XIV as a starting point, we plan to bring more of our titles to Xbox.”

“Players can expect more Square Enix games on the platform.”

Square Enix’s recent shift toward a multi-platform strategy reflects its efforts to adapt to rising development costs and the need to reach a wider audience.

With Final Fantasy XVI set to release on PC soon (September 17 on Steam and Epic Games), an Xbox version seems plausible. The Tokyo Game Show might bring more concrete announcements about this highly anticipated title.
