Recent insights from Xbox insider Tom Warren (later confirmed by Phil Spenser in Business Upadtes) suggest that Xbox may be gearing up to make a major play in the mobile space.
During an episode of the Iron Lords podcast, he dropped some exciting hints about Microsoft’s vision for mobile gaming.
According to Warren, there are signs pointing to the imminent launch of an official Xbox mobile gaming store as early as 2024.
Will the Activision Blizzard Acquisition Fuel Xbox’s Mobile Ambitions?
One key factor that could propel Xbox’s mobile endeavors is Microsoft’s recent massive $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
This mega-deal grants Microsoft access to a huge catalog of iconic gaming franchises like Call of Duty, Overwatch, Diablo 4, and World of Warcraft.
Warren speculates Microsoft could leverage these fan-favorite titles as a powerful draw to dethrone mobile gaming titans like the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
With its own game store, Microsoft will slowly started to release the mobile version of these games for Android and iOS.
This will not only increase the reach of this titles but also open a new revenue stream for Xbox gaming.
A Gradual and Strategic Integration
While the Activision Blizzard acquisition sets the stage for Xbox’s expanded gaming ambitions, Warren cautions that integration will likely be a gradual process.
Microsoft appears to be taking a strategic, measured approach to folding Activision’s vast content library into its Xbox ecosystem.
Rather than an immediate deluge of new games on Game Pass, gamers should expect a smooth, elongated rollout.
