Ubisoft’s CEO: “GTA 6 Will Bring More People to Gaming”

GTA 6 and Assassin's Creed Shadows

The gaming world is buzzing with excitement about Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), which is set to come out in fall 2025. Gamers everywhere are counting down the days until they can get their hands on this highly anticipated title. Many people are wondering how such a big game release will affect other games and companies in the industry. You might think that other game makers would be worried about competing with such a popular game. But surprisingly, one major company sees GTA 6’s release as a good thing for everyone.

Ubisoft, the company behind hit games like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, actually thinks GTA 6 could help boost their own game sales. This unexpected view came from Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, during a recent meeting with investors. Instead of seeing GTA 6 as a threat, Guillemot believes it could bring more people into gaming overall.

So, what exactly did Ubisoft say about GTA 6?

When an investor asked how GTA 6 might affect Ubisoft’s plans for 2025, as most of Ubisoft’s titles are open-world, Guillemot gave an interesting answer.

He explained:

“What we see generally when GTA is coming more people come to play. So, generally it is positive on the overall market and other games that are available during that time are actually doing really well as well.”

Guillemot backed up his claim with some facts from the past. He pointed out that when GTA V came out, Ubisoft actually saw their game sales go up, not down. For example, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag came out just a month after GTA V, and it ended up being one of the best-selling games in the whole Assassin’s Creed series. This shows that a big game release can create excitement that spills over to other games too.

“So it is something we saw a few times already because we had very good sales when GTA V came and also when they did a remaster on the new consoles so it is something that’s counter-intuitive but is working for us in general.”

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Guillemot has shared this positive outlook. Earlier this year, he said something similar during a Q3 investor meeting. He keeps emphasizing that major GTA releases tend to bring more people into gaming overall, which is good for the whole industry.

Are Other Industry Players as Optimistic?

But not everyone in the gaming world agrees with Ubisoft’s cheerful view. Matt Booty, an executive at Xbox, thinks that many game developers will be carefully planning their release dates to avoid competing directly with GTA 6. He believes that most companies will try to avoid releasing their games too close to GTA 6, so they don’t get overshadowed by such a huge title.

“I think many across the industry are of course going to plan around GTA 6, and we’re all looking forward to that game, which should be amazing. Certainly, everybody in the industry wants to make sure that we don’t land in the shadow of someone else’s big release, but we just need to keep options open.”

What Games Does Ubisoft Have in the Pipeline?

While Ubisoft hasn’t announced specific release dates for 2025, they have several projects in development that could potentially coincide with GTA 6’s launch:

  1. Anno 117: Pax Romana
  2. New Assassin’s Creed titles
  3. The Splinter Cell remake

For 2024, Ubisoft has a strong lineup including:

What’s Next for GTA 6 News?
