Sony Interactive Entertainment shocked the gaming world this week by announcing massive layoffs across its first-party PlayStation studios.
Around 900 employees are being let go, representing roughly 8% of PlayStation’s total staff.
This sweeping restructuring signals a new era for PlayStation and raises big questions about the future of PS5 exclusives.
Which Studios are Impacted?
The layoffs are hitting nearly every major PlayStation studio to some degree, including:
- Insomniac Games – The studio behind hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank laid off an undisclosed number of employees.
- Naughty Dog – The renowned studio behind franchises like The Last of Us and Uncharted also had job cuts.
- Guerrilla Games – The Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West developer was affected.
- Firesprite – This Liverpool-based studio that joined PlayStation in 2021 had reductions.
- London Studio – PlayStation is fully closing this VR-focused studio behind titles like Blood & Truth.
Even studios not suffering direct job losses will likely see projects canceled or reworked.
Why is Sony Making These Cuts?
In statements, PlayStation leadership cited both overstaffing from recent growth spurts and shifting priorities in game development and distribution.
PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst said trimming staff will “re-evaluate how we operate” and allow more focus on online experiences and multiplatform releases.
What Games Could Get Scrapped?
The biggest casualty seems to be Sony London Studio, which is being shut down entirely.
Their PSVR titles Blood & Truth and VR Worlds now seem destined for the cutting room floor.
Other unannounced games early in development are likely getting axed across Sony’s portfolio.
Will This Impact Upcoming Exclusives?
It’s unlikely that known PlayStation exclusives like Spider-Man 3, Wolverine, and Horizon Call of the Mountain will be directly affected.
But less prominent titles could see delays or scope reductions.
And future games just entering pre-production may never happen at all.
Is Sony Shifting Away From Narrative Single-Player Games?
This restructuring suggests a new focus on “live service” games at PlayStation.
Epic story-driven single-player experiences may take a backseat to online multiplayer and cross-platform titles under this new vision.
While Sony’s bread-and-butter franchises should be safe, new IP could trend toward games-as-a-service.
Only time will tell how this restructuring will reshape the games PlayStation fans can expect in the years ahead.
