The Next Big MMORPG from RuneScape’s Co-Founder?
After more than two decades since creating the iconic RuneScape, Adam Gower, the co-founder of Jagex, is back with a brand new MMORPG called “Brighter Shores”.
Developed by his new studio, Fen Research, this highly anticipated game promises to be a refreshing take on the genre, offering a smoother and more enjoyable experience that aims to reduce the notorious grind often associated with MMORPGs.
A Decade in the Making
Brighter Shores has been in development for an impressive decade, utilizing the studio’s proprietary Fenforge engine.
According to Gower, the game will feature his signature style while introducing innovative game design elements to combat the grindy gameplay commonly found in MMORPGs.
Unlike many MMORPGs that can feel like a never-ending grind, Brighter Shores aims to provide a refreshing and relaxing gaming experience.
Free-to-Play with a Premium Pass
One of the most exciting aspects of Brighter Shores is come up with free-to-play model with twist.
Unlike many modern MMOs and free-to-play games that bombard players with microtransactions, Brighter Shores promises “hours upon hours” of free content.
Additionally, players can opt for a premium pass that will unlock extra quests, adventures, stories, and features like player trading and special character names.

Gameplay and Story
Brighter Shores is set in the cozy and relaxing world of Adothria, where you’ll take on the role of a town guard in the charming town of Hopeport.
On your journey of exploration and discovery, you will encounter quirky characters, fascinating foes and learn various skills like magic, alchemy, fishing, blacksmithing, and more.
In a departure from the traditional mage, rogue, and warrior classes, Brighter Shores introduces three new class options:
- Cryoknight,
- Hammermage,
- Guardian.
“Creating this game has been a real labor of love. At times it has felt like an insurmountably ambitious task, so it’s amazing to finally see it coming together in the way I hoped. I can’t wait to see the world full of players enjoying what we have created,” — Gower.
When and Where Can I Play Brighter Shores?
While a specific release date hasn’t been locked in yet, Brighter Shores is slated to hit Mac and PC via Steam later in 2024.
The game will receive regular free updates post-launch too.
