Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Shuts Down in Key Regions

Harry Potter Magic Awakened

On October 29, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened officially came to an end in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, marking a notable moment for Harry Potter fans worldwide.

Developed by Zen Studio, Magic Awakened is a collectible card game RPG that initially launched in China and Taiwan in September 2021.

This game was the fourth title released under the Portkey Games label (Wizarding World), though fans in other regions had to wait until its global launch nearly two years later.

While NetEase handled the original release in China, Warner Bros. took over publishing for the Americas, Europe, and Oceania versions. Despite this recent closure, the NetEase version of the game will continue to operate, though Warner Bros. users will no longer have access.

The developers didn’t provide a specific reason for the shutdown but issued a statement expressing gratitude to their players, stating, “It was an honor creating this game, and we sincerely thank all of our incredible fans who have enjoyed playing.”

This closure is another challenge for WBD Gaming, which has faced several setbacks in 2024. Their much-anticipated game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, failed miserably, which led to a significant 41% drop in gaming revenue, as per the company’s last financial earnings report.

Meanwhile, Portkey Games’ Hogwarts Legacy, one of the top-selling games of 2023 with over 22 million copies sold, continues to perform well for the company. Warner Bros. is now preparing for a sequel to it.

This isn’t the first time a Harry Potter game has been discontinued. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, developed by Niantic, was also shut down just a few years after its launch, operating from 2019 until 2022.
