According to recent reports from Niko News, Black Myth: Wukong, the highly anticipated action RPG from Chinese developer Game Science, has achieved a new milestone by selling over 25 million copies worldwide since its launch in August 2024.

The game’s success story is nothing short of impressive, with sales figures that have consistently broken records. Within just three days of its release, Black Myth: Wukong sold 10 million copies, quickly escalating to 18 million in two weeks, and reaching the 20-million mark in its first month.

Niko Partners director Daniel Ahmad reported that approximately 75% of sales came from the Chinese market highlighting the game’s strong domestic appeal.

The Journey to the West-inspired title has not only dominated sales charts but also left its mark on Steam’s history. It became the platform’s most-played single-player game ever, boasting over 2.2 million concurrent users at its peak. According to SteamDB data, Black Myth: Wukong emerged as Steam’s biggest release of 2024, surpassing popular titles like Palworld, Helldivers 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in both units sold and revenue generated. As per VGInsights, the game had over $1 billion of gross revenue solely through Steam alone. A recent study by Will McCahill shows that the game’s popularity also helps to boost the overall positivity score of Chinese gamers on the Steam reviews system who are mostly known for their more critical approach.

Beyond just sales numbers, Black Myth: Wukong has garnered numerous prestigious accolades, including the Ultimate Game of the Year at the 2024 Golden Joystick Awards. At The Game Awards 2024, while it missed out on the Game of the Year title to Astro Bot, it still secured victories in the Best Action Game and Players’ Voice categories. The game’s excellence was further recognized at the Steam Awards 2024, where it won Game of the Year, Best Game You Suck At, and Outstanding Story.

Capitalizing on this tremendous success, Game Science has expanded into merchandise through a partnership with Alibaba’s Tmall platform. The official Black Myth: Wukong flagship store, which opened in January 2025, has already shown the brand’s strong market appeal. According to Yicai Global, the store generated an impressive 3 million yuan (approximately $410,000) in sales within just three days of its launch. The demand has been so overwhelming that six product categories sold out quickly, with some items having extended delivery times of up to 90 days.

Looking ahead, Game Science continues to support and expand the game. They’ve recently added new features like Boss Rush mode and Journeyer’s Charts for improved navigation. At Golden Joystick Awards, director Feng Ji has hinted at more “surprises” starting with an upcoming expansion and expressed ambitions for Black Myth: Wukong to be the first entry in a series “exploring” more Chinese mythological tales. While the Xbox Series X/S version faces some delays due to technical issues, the PS5 version recently received Pro support, enhancing its graphics and stability.
