Black Myth: Wukong Reportedly at 20 Million Units Sold; First DLC Slated for Early 2025

black myth wukong sales 20 million

Black Myth: Wukong has reportedly reached the monumental milestone of 20 million units sold.

The figures were shared by Daniel Camilo, an industry analyst based in China, who cited sources within Game Science, the game’s developer.

This latest number marks a significant jump from the 18 million units reported by VG Insight as of September 5, when the game had already generated over $850 million in revenue. Based on this growth, it’s reasonable to assume that the game is approaching $1 billion in gross revenue.

New Update (Sep 19): According to VG Insights Wukong is close to 20 million sales and has exceeded $950 million in revenue.

How Has Black Myth: Wukong Performed in Different Markets?

The game’s success spans multiple regions:

  • China: As expected, Black Myth: Wukong has performed exceptionally well in its home market, where it benefits from cultural familiarity and a sense of national pride. Earlier reports suggested that the Chinese market accounted for 76% of its total sales. Camilo also agrees with the estimate that more than 70% of sales come from China.
  • International Markets: The game is also doing very well outside China. According to the latest PlayStation reports, Black Myth: Wukong was the most-downloaded PlayStation Store game for August 2024 in North America, Japan, and Europe, outperforming established franchises like Madden NFL 25.
  • PC Gaming: Since its launch, Black Myth: Wukong has been breaking records on Steam. It achieved the highest single-day peak of any game this year, surpassing Palworld, and holds the second-highest 24-hour concurrent player count after PUBG. Additionally, it has set the record for the best peak for a single-player game of all time.

Is DLC Coming in 2025?

Along with the sales numbers, Camilo also revealed that the first downloadable content (DLC) for Black Myth: Wukong is expected to release in early 2025, likely around the Chinese New Year. This information aligns well with a statement made earlier this month by Daniel Wu, head of Game Science’s investor Hero Games. Wu confirmed that the team is working on an Elden Ring-style DLC and reassured fans that it won’t take another six years to develop, suggesting we might see it sooner.

However, despite the game’s massive sales, Camilo predicts that only around 20% of the player base will purchase the DLC. He attributes this to the game’s “too challenging” difficulty and the fact that the “novelty and national pride factor” may have faded by then in China, where the majority of the game’s sales have been recorded.

Best Seller of 2024?

As 2024 continues, Black Myth: Wukong remains a strong contender for the best-selling premium video game of the year. However, it will face stiff competition from major releases such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which is scheduled for release on October 25.

In the meantime, the developer is still working on the delayed Xbox Series S|X port, with Microsoft recently denying that the delay is related to any technical limitations of its consoles.
