Tomb Raider, the iconic video game series featuring adventurer Lara Croft, has reached an incredible milestone. Crystal Dynamics, the California-based game studio behind the franchise, recently announced that Tomb Raider games have sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
This achievement comes as the series approaches its 30th birthday, marking nearly three decades of thrilling explorations and puzzles.
The journey began on October 24, 1996, when the first Tomb Raider game was released in Europe for the Sega Saturn. Since then, Lara Croft has become a household name, inspiring movies, comics, and a dedicated fanbase.
In a statement, Crystal Dynamics expressed their gratitude to the loyal fan base that has supported Tomb Raider throughout its journey.
“We’re extremely grateful for the Tomb Raider community’s collective spirit of adventure and we look forward to all the journeys still to come as Lara Croft and Tomb Raider continue to reach new heights.”
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered Announced
To celebrate this milestone, Crystal Dynamics has announced a new remastered trilogy of the classic Tomb Raider games.
Set to launch on February 14, 2025, the remastered collection will include Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider Chronicles (2000), and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness (2003).
The trilogy will be available on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG, priced at $29.99. Pre-orders for the collection are now open.
Earlier this year, Crystal Dynamics released Tomb Raider I-III Remastered across the same platforms, allowing fans to relive Lara Croft’s earliest adventures with updated graphics and gameplay.
Next Tomb Raider Game?
While Crystal Dynamics has not revealed anything about Lara’s next big game, we know it will be published by Amazon Games.
The partnership was first announced by Amazon in 2022, revealing that the next installment in the Tomb Raider series is in development at Crystal Dynamics. It will be a multiplatform, single-player game, created using Unreal Engine 5.
The last major entry in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, concluded the reboot trilogy in 2018, leaving fans eager for news about the next chapter in Lara’s story.
Beyond Gaming
The Tomb Raider franchise isn’t just limited to games, though. Its popularity has spawned various adaptations across different media. Amazon is working on a TV show based on the games, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of the hit series Fleabag, at the helm. This project could potentially lead to a new film and tie-in game, expanding the Tomb Raider universe even further.
For those who can’t get enough of Lara Croft, Netflix and Powerhouse Animation recently launched an animated series called “The Legend of Lara Croft.” Set in the reboot continuity, the show features Haley Atwell, known for her roles in Captain America in the Marvel Universe (MCU), as the voice of the famous treasure hunter.
