Steam Drops Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

Steam Drops Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

If you’re one of the few Steam users still gaming on an older Windows OS, time is running out for support.

Steam has officially stopped supporting Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 as of January 1st, 2024.

With over 95% of Steam gamers already using Windows 10 or 11, this change impacts less than 1% of the player base – but it’s still disruptive if you haven’t upgraded yet.

Why Did Steam Make This Change?

There are a few reasons Steam is leaving legacy Windows versions behind:

  • Microsoft has already ended security updates for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, making them more vulnerable to malware and crashes.

  • The core functionality of Steam relies on the latest version of Chrome browser, which no longer supports these older Windows builds.

  • Focusing support efforts on modern OS allows Steam to keep innovating with new features and performance gains.

What About MacOS Users?

It’s not just Windows facing the cut; older MacOS versions (macOS 10.13 and 10.14) are also bidding farewell to Steam support on February 15th.

If you’re part of the Mac gaming community, it’s time to consider upgrading to ensure uninterrupted access to your favorite titles.
