Vertpaint Games, a studio known for their exceptional service work with industry giants like Crytek and Digital Extremes, is stepping into the spotlight with their ambitious debut title, Ritual Tides.

In a recent interview with Ash Milliman, CEO and Creative Director James Macleod revealed fascinating details about this upcoming horror experience, describing it as “Lovecraft meets Jurassic Park” – a combination that promises to deliver unique thrills in the horror gaming landscape.

A Mysterious Island Awaits

Set on a fictional island off Cornwall’s southwestern coast, Ritual Tides places players in a first-person horror experience where they’ll find themselves mysteriously stranded on a beach.

The game’s setting draws heavily from British folklore, with Macleod emphasizing how the rural architecture alone creates an inherently eerie atmosphere. “The environment is, in many ways, the main character of the game,” Macleod explained.

Artistic Innovation and Technical Excellence

What sets Ritual Tides apart is Vertpaint’s unique approach to development. The team employs a sophisticated photogrammetry system to capture authentic environments, regularly shooting at locations like Dartmoor to ensure unprecedented environmental detail. Lead Material Artist Chris, whom Macleod describes as “probably the best material artist in the world,” has been instrumental in creating the game’s distinctive visual fingerprint.

The studio has set an ambitious goal: to create “the most visually impressive game of 2025.” This high-fidelity approach, unusual for an indie horror title, stems from the team’s AAA development background, with members having worked at prestigious studios like Rockstar Games.

Beyond Traditional Horror Gaming

Ritual Tides promises to break from conventional horror game tropes in several ways. Rather than recycling the same enemies throughout the game, players will encounter a wide variety of creatures, with Macleod emphasizing that repeated encounters will only occur when narratively meaningful. This approach to enemy variation draws inspiration from games like Silent Hill while bringing its own unique twist to the genre.

Regarding combat, while the game will include some form of “gun” mechanic, Macleod suggests it won’t follow traditional horror game conventions. “In a Lovecraftian game, if you give someone a gun, you are undermining the cosmological horror aspect,” he explained, hinting at a more nuanced approach to player empowerment.

Atmospheric Storytelling

The game’s pacing has been carefully crafted to balance intense moments with quieter, explorative sequences. While there are elements of a “walking simulator,” the team has worked hard to create what Macleod calls “a lovely elegant pattern” of gameplay, incorporating both atmospheric exploration and adrenaline-pumping sequences.

Creative influences range from Lovecraftian literature to modern horror films like Robert Eggers’ “The Witch” and Netflix’s “The Apostle.” The team’s attention to detail extends to ensuring historical accuracy in environmental design, similar to Eggers’ meticulous approach to period authenticity.

Release and Future Plans

Ritual Tides is scheduled for a Q3 2025 release on PC, with console versions to follow. While many details remain under wraps, fans can look forward to the first gameplay reveal in February 2025.

The recent teaser released through IGN offers just a glimpse of what’s to come, with Macleod confirming that all future marketing materials will showcase actual gameplay rather than cinematic content.
