By Sagar V. Mankar In a surprising turn of events, Sea of Thieves, a former Xbox exclusive, has emerged as one of the top-selling pre-orders on the PlayStation 5 console.
Xbox Exclusive Top the PlayStation Charts
The fact that a game originally exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem is now dominating pre-order charts on a rival platform is quite remarkable.
Sea of Thieves, which launched in 2018, has secured the top spot for its premium edition and 5th for the standard edition on the PlayStation 5 pre-order list in US.
It outperformed other highly anticipated titles such as MLB The Show 24, Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection, Dragon’s Dogma 2 Deluxe Edition, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and Rise of the Ronin.
The situation appears to be similar, if not better, on the UK store, where the Premium Edition sits at number one, the Standard Edition at number four, and the Deluxe Edition at number ten.
It all started in last month, when Xbox announced plans to release four of its Xbox and PC exclusives on other consoles, and Sea of Thieves is one of them.
Pentiment was the first game to be released, now available on PS5, Switch, and PS4.
Hi-Fi Rush, set to be released on PS5 on March 19, will follow suit.
Obsidian’s co-op survival adventure Grounded, scheduled for release on PS5, PS4, and Switch on April 16, with cross-play support across all formats, is the third game in the lineup.
Finally, Sea of Thieves will set sail on PS5 on April 30, and it will also include cross-play support, enabling new players to interact with the existing Xbox and PC player base.
While Sea of Thieves’ success on PlayStation is undoubtedly noteworthy, the real excitement lies in the possibility of even bigger games making the leap to cross-platform releases.
According to Forbes, Bethesda’s highly anticipated Starfield, another Microsoft-owned title, potentially landing on the PlayStation platform.
If a game like Starfield, with its massive hype and potential for astronomical sales, were to be released on PlayStation, it could be a game-changer for the industry.
