Sea of Thieves might be sailing onto PlayStation 5 consoles soon according to rumors.
Microsoft’s pirate multiplayer game has been an Xbox and PC exclusive since launching in 2018.
But whispers suggest it could drop anchor on rival Sony platforms in the near future.
This potential pillaging of the PlayStation Store by Sea of Thieves would be the first Xbox exclusive jumping ship to other consoles.
Alongside this salty rumor, fresh claims indicate the recent indie hit Hi-Fi Rush may also be soundtracking its way onto Nintendo Switch.
Is this the end of traditional exclusives as we know them? Let’s weigh the anchor on these rumors and see where the winds are blowing.
Setting Sail for New Ports
While Microsoft is staying quiet, insiders speaking to journalist Stephen Totilo say Sea of Thieves is being considered for a PS5 version.
This would represent a radical approach by Xbox against conventional exclusive wisdom.
In the past, Xbox has only ported games to Nintendo platforms, like Ori and the Blind Forest to Switch.
In 2021, Microsoft allowed Bethesda games for PlayStation even after its acquisition.
But direct exclusive title on rival Sony consoles is completely uncharted territory.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, a similar rumor suggested a “critically acclaimed” Xbox game was Switch-bound.
All signs point to the rhythm action game Hi-Fi Rush as the obvious stowaway.
Adding credence, notable industry leaker lolilolailo seemed to confirm Hi-Fi Rush is indeed the rumored Switch release.
If both games make the jump to rival platforms, it shows Xbox further adopting multiplatform over exclusives.
About Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is a video game developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios.
It was first released on March 20, 2018, and has been updated several times since then, including crossovers with other Microsoft-owned franchises like Halo and Gears of War.
In December 2023, the game launched single-player servers to help new players get used to the game mechanics before dealing with PvP combat.
The game’s latest free expansion, called The Legend of Monkey Island, was released in July 2023 and is based on the classic Monkey Island franchise.
The End of the Exclusive?
Clearly, the tides are changing when it comes to traditional exclusives.
For Xbox and even PlayStation, the value and meaning of exclusives appear to be shifting.
It’s not new for a Sony.
They have also brought former exclusives like Horizon Zero Dawn to PC in recent years.
With Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Premium, platform holders seem more focused on subscription services as differentiators rather than exclusives alone.
Still, questions remain about how far this strategy will go.
Will the more exclusive games ever appear on a rival platform?
