Nearly two years after its debut, game developer and manufacturing company “Panic” has finally matched up with the demand and supply for preorders of its retro Playdate handheld.
The company has shipped over 70,000 of consoles, a significant increase from last April’s 50,000.
For the first time, a “limited number” is now in stock for immediate purchase on Panic’s site.
Playdate Now Shipping Within Days or Weeks
Speaking to The Verge, Panic’s Greg Maletic said wait times for new orders “should be significantly shorter now.”
He estimates new Playdates will ship anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after ordering.
Previously, customers faced waits of many months due to production constraints.
But Panic seems to have smoothed out manufacturing to meet demand.
Playdate Launches in 22 New Countries
As part of the shipping update, Panic announced the Playdate is launching in 22 new countries:
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Greece
- Hong Kong
- Hungary
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malaysia
- Malta
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Romania
- Singapore
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- South Korea
- Sweden
- Switzerland
Ironically, Malaysia is where Playdate is manufactured but wasn’t available until now due to complex global logistics.
This barrier has finally been resolved so Malaysian gamers can buy Playdate.
120+ Games On Playdate Catalog
The curated Playdate Catalog now features over 120 titles to purchase, plus 800+ games through Itch.io.
While no developers are getting rich, Maletic says Playdate offers a fun hobby and renewed passion for some.
The small but dedicated user base provides an outlet for creativity.
What’s Next – More Seasons, No Hardware Changes
Panic remains interested in doing another seasonal content drop like the original 24 launch titles.
But coordinating secret development for dozens of games again has logistical hurdles.
For now, the hardware itself isn’t changing with redesigns or new colors.
Panic believes Playdate still has untapped potential in its current adorable form factor.
Playdate’s Enduring Retro Charm
Playdate has carved out a niche for itself two years in with its straightforward focus on fun retro-style games.
While supplies were limited, each new shipment saw instant sellouts.
Now with production meeting demand, a growing catalog of indie titles, and availability in new markets, Playdate seems poised for an even brighter future.
