Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Hits Major Sales Milestone as Sony Forecasts Slowing PS5 Sales

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has swung its way to a monumental sales achievement, according to Sony’s latest financial report.

The blockbuster PlayStation exclusive sold over 10 million copies just over 100 days after launch

This makes it one of Sony’s fastest-selling first-party titles ever.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2’s Lightning-Fast 10 Million Sales

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has achieved a massive sales milestone, selling over 10 million units worldwide in just over 3 months.

  • 2.5 million units on launch day
  • 5 million sales only 11 days post-launch.
  • 10 million copies sold in 100+ days.

Only 2018’s God of War Ragnarök reached 10 million quickly, hitting the milestone in just 75 days

For reference, Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 took over 6 months to reach 10 million sales in 2018-19.

The sequel has smashed Franchise records like:

  • Fastest-selling Superhero game of all time
  • Fastest-sold game exclusively made for PS5

As of February 2024, Marvel’s Spider-Man game franchises (Spider-Man 1 & 2 and its spin-off Miles Morales) have sold over 50 million copies.

The Spider-Man game franchise also has the distinction of being the best-selling Superhero game of all time.

PS5 Sales Gradual Decline Forecast by Sony

While software sales are strong, Sony is less optimistic about future PS5 hardware sales.

They forecast a “gradual decline” from 2023 onwards as the console enters the “latter half of its lifecycle.

Q3 2023 saw PS5 shipments increase to 8.2 million units, up from 6.3 million the prior year.

However, total sales now stand at 54.8 million, around 2.4 million less than the PS4 at the same point after launch.

Production constraints continue to plague PS5 sales.

But Sony also cites pricier offerings and fewer compelling first-party exclusives as sales growth drivers wane.

No Major Franchise Releases Before April 2025

Alongside slowing PS5 console sales, Sony expects weaker first-party software sales in the coming year.

The company has no major franchise releases planned before April 2025.

Major titles like the next God of War, Spider-Man, and more remain in development.

But they are likely years away based on typical dev cycles.

Sony aims to fill the gap with attractive third-party titles and Live Service games.

What Does This Mean for PS5’s Future?

The PS5’s days are far from numbered.

But Sony appears ready to scale back production and pivot to profitability sooner than with previous PlayStation gens.

This mature “latter stage” of the lifecycle is arriving relatively quickly for the PS5.

With supply constraints easing in 2024, Sony can better dictate the pace of PS5 sales.

Rumors also persist about a PS5 Pro down the line to reinvigorate the console.
