CD Projekt Red, the renowned game developer behind the critically acclaimed The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, has revealed exciting plans to venture into the mobile gaming market.
According to recent reports by VGC, the studio is considering licensing its popular intellectual properties (IPs) to third-party developers for mobile game adaptations.
What Did CD Projekt Red’s CEO Say?
During a recent Q&A session following the company’s FY2023 earnings call, Michal Nowakowski, the joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, confirmed that the studio is actively exploring opportunities to bring its major IPs to mobile platforms.
When reporters asked about the possibility of licensing their big IPs “to third parties to make mobile games,” Nowakowski’s response was straightforward: “The answer is yes.”
Are There Any Concrete Plans Yet?
While Nowakowski acknowledged that discussions are ongoing, he clarified that the studio does not have any official announcements to make at the moment.
However, he assured fans that they will share more information “when the time comes.”
Nowakowski also mentioned that the studio has not yet decided on a specific business model for these potential mobile endeavors, whether it would be a one-time licensing deal or a revenue-sharing arrangement.
Direct Port or Another Spinoff?
The prospect of experiencing the rich worlds of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 on mobile devices is undoubtedly exciting for fans.
It remains to be seen whether CD Projekt Red will opt for direct ports of their acclaimed games or explore the creation of another spinoff titles tailored specifically for mobile platforms, similar to The Witcher: Monster Slayer and Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.
- The Witcher: Monster Slayer, a geolocation-based RPG, was released in July 2021 on mobile but was subsequently shut down in June 2023 due to its mixed reception.
- Additionally, card game spin-off Gwent, as well as a standalone single-player expansion called Thronebreaker, were also released on mobile, with Gwent receiving generally positive reviews across all platforms. However, official support for Gwent ended in October 2023.
The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 have massive fanbases and are known for their critical acclaim immersive storytelling, rich worlds, and captivating gameplay experiences.
Translating these elements to mobile devices could set a new standard for mobile gaming and attract a broader audience to the platform.
