Counter-Strike’s iconic map de_aztec has been reimagined for retro shooter Quake through the community Remix Jam project.
This nostalgic adaptation brings a piece of CS history into Quake’s fast-paced arena combat.
Transforming de_aztec for Quake
Developer Radiator, known for the Quake single player map Taught by Thirst, led this de_aztec’s remake.
Having already adapted CS’s fy_iceworld and Halo’s Hang ‘Em High previously, he rebuilt aztec from the ground up to capture its essence.
The goal was hitting players with nostalgia immediately, retaining de_aztec’s classic combat cover, double doors, bridge area and map flow.
Radiator preserved recognizable elements like the wooden bridge planks while brightening the overall theme and adding Mesoamerican flair.
Old Map, New Tricks
To make de_aztec work in Quake, Radiator adapted its gameplay style rather than copying CS’s round-based battles.
Monster, weapon and item placements were reworked to suit Quake’s faster pace.
The iconic bridge still funnels combat, with other routes cleverly blocked off.
New areas like the open roof provide fresh tactical possibilities the CS original lacked.
Battle Up the Pyramid
As an endgame challenge, Radiator added a Mayan step pyramid to conclude de_aztec.
Players must fight to its summit, where a powerful Shambler boss provides the final combat test.
This blend of nostalgic yet new geometry encapsulates the Quake spin on de_aztec – familiar yet fresh for a unique fragging experience.
