The iconic real-time strategy franchise Age of Empires is coming to mobile devices later this year.

Developed through a partnership between World’s Edge Studio and TiMi Studio Group, Age of Empires Mobile aims to bring the strategic base-building and epic historical battles of the beloved PC series to on-the-go gamers worldwide.

When is the Mobile Version Coming?

Age of Empires Mobile is slated for release globally in late 2024, with pre-registration open for Android and iOS.

The game will be free-to-play with in-app purchases for progression boosts and resources.

Early testing in select regions is also planned before the full launch.

What Gameplay Can We Expect?

While tailored for mobile, Age of Empires Mobile aims to capture the core RTS gameplay loop of building bases, gathering resources, training armies, and waging a war that has captivated PC gamers for over two decades.

  • Players will be able to choose from a range of historical civilizations spanning the Chinese, Roman, Frankish, and Byzantine empires.
  • Iconic characters like Joan of Arc, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar will also be playable hero units.
  • The game will feature both 1v1 competitive matches and large-scale joint siege battles.

How Is This Version Different from the PC Games?

As a mobile adaptation, some key changes have been made.

  • Simplified controls and interface designed for touchscreens
  • Reduced number of units controlled at one time
  • “Smart assists” to aid with combat maneuvers
  • New alliance-focused multiplayer modes

According to producer Robin Xin, the goal is to make Age of Empires more approachable on mobile while still retaining the strategy fans love.

Who’s Developing the Age of Empires Mobile?

Age of Empires Mobile is a collaborative project between Xbox Game Studios, World’s Edge Studio (developers of the core PC series), and TiMi Studio Group (Tencent subsidiary), makers of popular mobile titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Honor of Kings.

TiMi is both developing and publishing the mobile version, leveraging their expertise in mobile game creation and publishing.

However, World’s Edge has remained deeply involved throughout production to ensure franchise authenticity.

For strategy fans eager to build their empires wherever they go, Age of Empires Mobile will be one to watch for later this year.
