After the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3, the renowned RPG developer Larian Studios is gearing up for its next big projects.
In a recent Steam blog post, the studio confirmed that it is currently working on two new ambitious game projects based on original IPs.
What Can We Expect from Larian’s New Games?
While details about the new games are scarce, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke has promised that these projects will be “our best work ever.”
“I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever. I get excited like a kid watching the key imagery, want to show it to everyone now and grumble in frustration at having to wait until it’s actually all working.”
According to Vincke, the studio is fueled by the same passion and creativity that brought Baldur’s Gate 3 to life, but with a fresh approach and new ideas.
“Even as our focus turns to these new games, the sensibilities that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive and well here at the Larian castle.”
One of the projects is described as “still familiar enough [to its earlier work], but different,” hinting at a potential evolution of Larian’s signature RPG style.
The other project is shrouded in mystery, but Vincke’s excitement suggests that fans are in for a treat.
Why Is Larian Venturing into New IPs?
After six years of working within the Forgotten Realms setting for Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios has decided to seize the opportunity to develop its own original intellectual properties (IPs).
This move allows the studio to have complete creative freedom and explore new narrative and gameplay directions without being bound by existing franchises.
Larian emphasized its commitment to creating immersive experiences shaped by player choices, a hallmark of its games like Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3.
The studio believes that its new projects will embody these core values while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in RPG storytelling and gameplay.
Will There Be a Baldur’s Gate 4?
Earlier this year Larian Studios confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3’s narrative is complete and they won’t be introducing any major new content or expansions to it.
“We won’t be introducing any major new narrative content to the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 or its origin characters and companions, nor will we be making expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4.”
This led fans to wonder what lies ahead for this beloved franchise?
But in an interview with PC Gamer, Eugene Evans, Senior VP of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro, tells that Hasbro, the owner of D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast, is already exploring options (other developer studios) to keep the Baldur’s Gate saga alive and thriving.
So, we might see Baldur’s Gate 4 in future helmed by a different studio.
