According to industry-tracking firm Circana (noted by GamingIndustry.biz), EA Sports College Football 25 has taken the top spot in July sales charts in the US.
This game not only soared to the top of the July charts but also played a key role in boosting overall video game sales for the month. For the first time this year, every category of game sales saw a year-over-year increase.
- 10% increase in video game content spending.
- 29% growth in console content spending
- 8% rise in mobile spending.
However, this was slightly offset by a 6% decline in spending on PC, cloud, and non-console VR content, Circana stated.
Moreover, EA Sports College Football 25 has not only claimed the top spot on the July charts but has also become the best-selling game of 2024 in the US this year, driving both content and hardware growth on console platforms.
As EA Sports College Football 25 is exclusively available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, breathed new life into this console hardware.
- PlayStation 5 hardware sales increased by 25% year-over-year.
- Xbox Series hardware sales jumped by an impressive 48%.
The game’s success was evident from its launch, with EA reporting that 2.2 million unique players accessed the game during its early access period, available exclusively to Deluxe Edition players three days before the official launch. EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, praised the game’s performance during an analyst call, calling it “a monumental moment for EA Sports.”
The game’s success is even more apparent when we look at the top 20 best-selling games in the U.S. for July 2024:
- EA Sports College Football 25 (Electronic Arts)
- EA Sports MVP Bundle (Electronic Arts)
- Elden Ring (Bandai Namco Entertainment)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) (Activision Blizzard)
- Minecraft (Multiple Video Game Manufacturers)
Not only did EA Sports College Football 25 claim the top spot, but the EA Sports MVP Bundle, which includes both EA Sports College Football 25 Deluxe Edition and Madden NFL 25 Deluxe Edition, secured the second position.
Circana also noted the dollar sales figures of College Football 25 in just the first month alone more than tripled the lifetime dollar sales totals of NCAA Football 07, which was the previous best-selling college football game in history.
While EA Sports College Football 25 has dominated the charts, other games have also seen movement in the rankings:
- Tekken 8 also saw a boost, moving from 30th to 14th place, fueled by multiple summer sales events and the release of new content, including a new character, Lidia Sobieska.
- The Crew: Motorfest and Tekken 8. The Crew: Motorfest jumped from 37th to 19th place, thanks to summer sales and new content updates, including the “Donk vs Lowrider” playlist.
- Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition debuted at number 6, showcasing the enduring popularity of classic Nintendo titles.
In the broader scope of 2024, the overall video game sales in July 2024 reached $4.77 billion, a 10% increase from July 2023’s $4.35 billion. Video game content sales, which include physical and digital games, DLC, and subscriptions, grew by 10% as well from $3.88 billion to $4.263 billion.
