Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Shutting Down: What Fans Need to Know

In a surprising turn of events, Warner Bros has announced the shutdown of its mobile game Harry Potter: Magic Awakened in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania regions. Starting October 29, 2024, players from these regions will no longer be able to access the game.

However, it’s important to note that the game will continue to be available for players in Asia, including Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other select Asia and MENA territories.

The game, which began in China and Taiwan on mobile in 2021, went global in July 2023, including on PC. However, the PC version’s servers were restricted to Southeast Asia.

Breakdown of the closure timeline:

  • August 26, 2024: The game was removed from the App Store and Google Play.
  • August 26, 2024 – October 29, 2024: Players can continue to use existing currency and items, but no new purchases can be made.
  • October 29, 2024: Official servers from Americas, Europe, and Oceania will be shut down.

Can Players Transfer Their Progress to Other Servers?

Unfortunately, server transfers will not be possible. This means that players in affected regions will lose all their progress, including purchased items and characters, when the servers shut down.

Players can continue to enjoy the game until October 29, 2024, and are encouraged to spend all existing in-game currency, as refunds will not be available for past purchases.

The current season, Intercontinental Wizard Cup, will run as planned until September 17, 2024. However, no further content updates will be released after this date.

What About the PC Version of the Game?

The situation for PC players is a bit more complex. While Warner Bros had previously mentioned finalizing a PC version for global release, this is now off the table. However, the PC version available through NetEase servers in Southeast Asia may continue to operate.

Why is Warner Bros Shutting Down Harry Potter: Magic Awakened?

While Warner Bros hasn’t provided specific reasons for the shutdown, it’s worth noting that this decision comes in the wake of other recent setbacks for the company, including the disappointing performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and poor Q2 results this year.

The closure of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened stands in stark contrast to the success of Hogwarts Legacy, which Warner Bros celebrated as the best-selling game of 2023. This unexpected shutdown raises questions about the future of Harry Potter gaming experiences and Warner Bros’ strategy in the mobile and free-to-play market.
