Swedish developer, Hazelight Studios, recently celebrated a major milestone for its popular co-operative action adventure game It Takes Two, announcing that the game has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
The studio shared this news on X, expressing heartfelt gratitude to fans for their overwhelming support. “You’re the best fans in the world,” Hazelight posted, thanking the millions of players who have embraced the game’s unique journey with Cody and May.
A Remarkable Journey
It Takes Two has come a long way since its launch in March 2021:
- Initial Release: PC, Xbox, and PlayStation
- Nintendo Switch Release: November 2022
- First Million: Sold in just one month after launch
- 5 Million: Reached within the first year
- 10 Million: Achieved in two years
- 16 Million: Hit in March 2024
- 20 Million: Announced on October 16, 2024
That’s an extra 4 million copies in just seven months – pretty impressive for a three-year-old co-op game!
One of the key factors behind the game’s continued success is the widespread positive feedback from both critics and players.
Upon release, It Takes Two received numerous awards and critical acclaim. It boasts an impressive 88 Metascore on Metacritic and a user score of 8.9.
The game has won several prestigious titles:
- Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021
- Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer Game awards
- Golden Joystick for Best Multiplayer Game
- GDC Award for Best Design
- DICE Awards for Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Game Design

It Takes Two: The Movie?
In addition to these achievements, It Takes Two is being adapted into a film by Amazon Studios, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson serving as a producer.
What’s Next for Hazelight Studios?
As for the future, Hazelight Studios has hinted at its next project. Josef Fares, the studio’s founder, teased fans on social media, revealing that the team is working on a brand-new IP.
- The title is partially revealed as “S*** ******N”.
- Like their previous games, it will be published under EA’s Originals label.
- It’s described as an “all-new co-op adventure”.
The studio shared an image of documents labeled “NEW IP” with a release year scribbled out, hinting that an official announcement is coming soon.
At the time of writing, the game is available at a discounted price of $9.99 on the PlayStation Store, down from its original $39.99 price.
