Supercell is preparing to transform Clash Royale into a broader strategy game platform, starting with the addition of Clash Mini as a new game mode in June 2025. This vision was shared by Clash Royale’s General Manager, Aleksandar Markovic, at Roviocon Google 2024, as reported by mobilegamer.biz.
Markovic explained that Supercell drew inspiration from successful platforms like Fortnite, Roblox, and League of Legends, which offer diverse gaming experiences within a single game. By following a similar path, Supercell aims to expand Clash Royale beyond its current gameplay format, introducing new modes and features to keep players engaged.
The Return of Clash Mini
Clash Mini, an autochess-style game released in a soft beta in 2021, was halted in March 2024. At that time, Supercell hinted at its comeback within the Clash Royale ecosystem. It is now returning, not as a standalone game, but as a major game mode within Clash Royale.
Why the Change in Strategy?
The decision to evolve Clash Royale came after a noticeable decline in player engagement and revenue in 2022, which hit its lowest point by 2023.
After a strong year in 2021—with the introduction of new character types, cards, and system updates driving higher revenue—the game failed to replicate that same success in 2022.
In the subsequent year, Supercell’s “Update for Losers,” which revamped the battle pass system and pricing, resulted in adverse player feedback and a downward trend in revenue that reached its lowest point.
In the meantime, Supercell achieved success with Card Evolution, which added new abilities or behaviors to existing characters. This innovation allowed the team to efficiently create “new” content, re-engage players, and significantly increase revenues in late 2023.
For more content, Supercell is now incorporating their cancelled game as a new mode. They previously expermented this with the Goblin Queen’s Journey update earlier in the year, but it did not meet expectations. However, Markovic acknowledged that the experiment provided valuable insights into player preferences.
Let’s see how this experiment unfolds and whether we can expect more third-party games to be integrated into Clash Royale. Stay tuned to GAMING FOODLE for more industry news.
