Nitro Games, a Finnish mobile game developer, announced that Netflix has canceled a previously unannounced game project they were working on together.
The collaboration was initially revealed on November 8, 2023, with Nitro Games signing a Game Development and Publishing Agreement valued at approximately 9 million EUR.
The project involved “multiplatform game” development and post-launch live services based on an undisclosed IP, with an expected completion date in 2026.
However, on February 25, 2025, Nitro Games issued a press release stating that Netflix had terminated the project. As a result, it will now conclude in early 2025—about nine months earlier than planned—with roughly 70% of the projected order value still expected to materialize.
Jussi Tähtinen, CEO of Nitro Games, expressed disappointment but highlighted the company’s financial stability, noting that their diversified project portfolio would help them absorb the impact and stick to their 2025 roadmap.
“This is obviously a bummer for us. That said, thanks to our diversified project portfolio, we have the financial stability to absorb the negative impact and to continue forward with our roadmap for the year.”
This cancellation aligns with broader shifts in Netflix’s gaming strategy. Earlier in February 2025, Netflix axed six other game projects, including titles like Tale of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, as part of efforts to adjust its portfolio based on member preferences.
While the specifics of the Nitro Games project remain undisclosed, its cancellation reflects Netflix’s ongoing reevaluation of its gaming ventures, which have seen mixed success since the company began expanding into interactive entertainment.
Nitro Games, known for titles like Autogun Heroes and NERF: Superblast, continues to focus on its core strengths in action and shooter games despite this setback.
In related news, Netflix Games is also seeing the first major game removal of this year with puzzle arcade action game Shatter Remastered scheduled to leave the platform on March 21st, 2025.
