The indie gaming sensation Balatro has achieved a remarkable milestone, selling over 3.5 million copies across various platforms.

The game’s official X account (formerly Twitter) announced the achievement with a playful nod to its humble beginnings. Developer LocalThunk humorously reflected, “Just gonna make a game for myself and a few friends,” alongside a celebratory image showcasing the impressive sales figure.

At its heart, Balatro is a poker-themed roguelike deck-building game. Players build strategic poker hands, create powerful card combinations, collect unique Jokers, and face off against challenging Boss Blinds. The game’s blend of strategy, luck, and engaging mechanics has captivated players worldwide. Within its first month after launch on PC and console, Balatro crossed the one-million-sales mark.

At the recent The Game Awards on December 13, the game received multiple prestigious accolades, including Mobile Game of the YearBest Debut Indie Game, and Indie Game of the Year. The recognition continued at the inaugural Indie Game Awards, where Balatro secured the Game of the Year title.

LocalThunk has also fostered collaborations with other popular indie titles. One notable crossover included integrating a version of Balatro into Dave the Diver, another celebrated indie game.

Following its mobile release on September 26, Balatro has also proven to be a financial powerhouse. In just two months, the game generated nearly $4.4 million in revenue across the App Store and Google Play, according to MobileGamer.biz.

Looking ahead, fans have more to anticipate. A significant gameplay update for Balatro is already scheduled for 2025, promising new features and enhanced gameplay experiences.

The game originally launched on PC and consoles on February 20, 2024, including Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A macOS version followed on March 1, and mobile ports for iOS and Android arrived on September 26, 2024.
