Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed that the upcoming Minecraft movie won’t be the last time we’ll see Xbox games on the big screen.
The Minecraft movie hits theaters on April 4, featuring Jack Black as the game’s hero Steve, alongside Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. This film has been in the works for over a decade, bouncing between different directors before finally landing with “Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer shared that Xbox is getting better at bringing games to screens. “We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves,” Spencer said. “You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.”
Xbox’s track record with adaptations has been a bit of a mixed bag. The Halo series lasted two seasons on Paramount Plus before getting the axe in July 2024. But Fallout on Amazon Prime became a massive hit in 2024, scooping up 17 Emmy nominations.
Minecraft has grown into the best-selling video game ever, with over 300 million copies sold. Microsoft bought developer Mojang for $2.5 billion back in 2014, and since then, the game’s player base has exploded.
As a nice bonus for fans, Microsoft will add the movie’s characters to the game as playable avatars starting March 20.
Game adaptations have been on a hot streak lately, with hits like “Sonic 3,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and HBO’s “The Last of Us.” If the Minecraft movie scores big, we might see a whole universe of spin-offs.
