Xbox fans say goodbye to the Xbox 360 Marketplace, which now officially shuts down on July 29, 2024.
This marks the end of an era that began in November 2005 when the Xbox 360 console was first released.
This marketplace was a significant part of the gaming world for nearly 19 years, offering gamers a unique place to buy digital games and add-ons.
What Was the Xbox 360 Marketplace?
The Xbox 360 Marketplace was an online store where gamers could buy and download games, extra game content like DLC, and other digital items like avatars, icons, and themes.
It was one of the first platforms that allowed players to purchase games directly from their consoles, changing how people got their hands on new games. Before that, buying physical copies from stores was the only option for most gamers.
The marketplace offered a wide variety of games, from small indie titles to big blockbuster AAA hits, making it a beloved platform for gamers around the world.
Many games, like Aegis Wing, Meteos Wars, The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, Diabolical Pitch, Death Tank, and Crimson Alliance, were exclusive to the Xbox 360 Marketplace, making it a special place for fans.
Why Is the Xbox 360 Marketplace Closing?
The decision to close the Xbox 360 Marketplace is part of Microsoft’s plan to focus on newer consoles like the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
These modern platforms offer better graphics, more features, and a wider range of games. While the Xbox 360 was a groundbreaking console in its time, Microsoft wants to concentrate on the future of gaming technology.
Even though the marketplace is closing, gamers will still be able to re-download any games and add-ons they already own. Plus, many Xbox 360 games can still be played on newer consoles due to backward compatibility, allowing players to continue enjoying their favorite titles.
What Happens to Games Exclusive to the Xbox 360 Marketplace?
With the closure of the marketplace, several exclusive games and add-ons will no longer be available for purchase. This includes popular titles like The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, Death Tank, and Diabolical Pitch.
While many Xbox 360 games are available on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, some content, such as unique avatars and themes, will be lost forever. This is a sad moment for fans who cherished these exclusive items.
How Are Fans Reacting?
Fans worldwide have taken to social media to express their nostalgia and share memories of the Xbox 360 Marketplace. Many have posted about their favorite games and experiences, reflecting on the impact the platform had on their gaming lives.

Today the Xbox 360 Marketplace shuts down for good, taking hundreds of games and DLC off the market, with no legal way to access them. We’re working to fix copyright law for game preservation, but for now, we figured a cake wouldn’t hurt. 🎂 pic.twitter.com/nxXIbJ8kkQ

I humbly applaud for gamers who STILL game on Xbox 360. Dedicated fans. I feel bad that they won’t get to explore market place.
It seems like Microsoft are trying to force these gamers to move to Xbox Series X. Gamers should game on their preferred devices. No one left behind!

With the OG Xbox 360 marketplace shutting down, I’d like to preserve some cool/goofy as fuck avatar item screenshots, because no matter if it’s shutting down I’m not paying £3.39 for Raiden MGS2 outfit that I can barely see. pic.twitter.com/hHjnXLJ7a6

In the days leading up to the shutdown, some gamers rushed to buy games and downloadable content (DLC) that would soon become unavailable. This last-minute shopping spree shows how much the platform meant to its community.
What Does This Mean for Digital Game Preservation?
The closure of the Xbox 360 Marketplace has sparked conversations about digital game preservation. As more games become digital-only, the risk of losing them increases. Once a platform like this shuts down, exclusive content can be lost forever if not preserved properly.
To address some of these concerns, Xbox has formed a new team dedicated solely to game preservation and backwards/forwards compatibility.
This news came from a leaked internal email (in April 2024), where Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed the initiative to safeguard the vast library of Xbox games, ensuring their accessibility for future generations of players, regardless of hardware advancements or platform shifts. She wrote,
“We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself. We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy.”
As we bid farewell to the Xbox 360 Marketplace, we cherish the memories and the role it played in shaping the gaming industry as we know it today.
