In 2024, the beloved word puzzle game Wordle continued to challenge and entertain millions of players worldwide. In a recent interview with Today, Everdeen Mason, the editorial director of New York Times Games, revealed that players solved an impressive 5.3 billion Wordle puzzles throughout the year, contributing to a total of 11.1 billion puzzles solved across all NYT games.
Mason also shared interesting facts about the game:
- The most popular day for Wordle was April 23rd, with the word “Rover.”
- The word that caused the most trouble appeared on October 15th, and it was “Corer,” breaking 5.6 million streaks.
- 2.8 million players use the same starting word every day.
- The most common starting word remains “Adieu,” favored for its high vowel count.
- Other popular starting words include “Ouija” and “Ocean.”
Wordle is a fun word puzzle game where players have six tries to guess a five-letter word. It was created by engineer Josh Wardle as a sweet gift for his partner but quickly became a global sensation with thousands of daily players. The New York Times acquired Wordle in 2022.
Beyond Wordle, other New York Times puzzles have maintained their popularity in 2024. The Mini Crossword saw 2.1 billion plays, while the newer word-search-style game Strands reached 1.3 billion plays. Google’s Year in Search revealed Connections was the most-searched game of the year 2024, surpassing even major video game releases like Helldivers 2 and Black Myth Wukong.
