Chinese team Wolves Esports claimed victory in the Teamfight Tactics (TFT) tournament at the Esports World Cup 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this Sunday.
They secured the championship by defeating the Korean powerhouse T1 by 3:1 in the grand final, taking home $200,000 and 1,000 Club Points.
Tournament Structure
Normally TFT is an individual sport, but the EWC brought a unique 4 vs. 4 format. The tournament featured the top 16 teams, each having 4 players and individual performance can determine overall team wins.
These 16 teams were divided into four groups, competing in a best-of-three, double-elimination format.
The top two teams from each group advanced to the playoffs, where the intense competition continued until only two teams remained for the best-of-five grand final.
Wolves Esports’s Road to Victory
Wolves Esports showcased their dominance throughout the tournament. They topped Group A, defeating ZETA Division and Branching Out with 2:1 victories each.
In the quarterfinals, they outplayed Natus Vincere with a 2:0 win, followed by another 2:0 triumph over Team Vitality in the semifinals, earning their spot in the final match.
How Did Runner-Up T1 Perform?
T1 also had a strong run in the tournament, topping Group C by defeating Weibo Gaming and Zero Tenacity with 2:1 victories each.
They continued their winning streak by defeating Branching Out in the quarterfinals and Twisted Minds in the semifinals, both with 2:0 scores.
However, T1 couldn’t overcome the dominance of Wolves Esports in the BO5 grand final, ultimately losing 1:3.
Standout Performer
Wolves Esports’ player LiShao was named the tournament’s MVP, earning an additional $50,000 for his outstanding performance.
Great to see @Wolves LiShao, Sheltie, Serein, YGQF and their coach Ningli3z won the #EWC2024.
The 4v4 format is definitely a new life of TFT Esports! Can’t wait to see more 4v4 world-class events in the future!
I’m also grateful to be the coach of JDG. See you in the next EWC! pic.twitter.com/Y6wM5FUl7z
