Marvel’s Wolverine, an upcoming PlayStation 5 title from Sony’s Insomniac Games, has experienced a shift in creative direction. Brian Horton, who was publicly announced as the game’s creative director in 2021, has stepped away from the project since the summer. In his place, Marcus Smith has been appointed as the new creative director, with Mike Daly serving as the game’s new director as per a report from Game File. This leadership duo previously collaborated on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a critically acclaimed PS5 release from 2021.
Cameron Christian, the originally announced game director, remains at Insomniac in a different capacity. While Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) confirmed the leadership changes, the reasons behind the decision were not disclosed. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that these shifts stem from creative choices surrounding the game.
Horton, meanwhile, has taken on a new challenge as the creative director of the Perfect Dark reboot. The highly anticipated first-person shooter is being co-developed by Microsoft’s The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, a subsidiary of Embracer Group. An Xbox representative confirmed Horton’s role, emphasizing his extensive experience and its potential impact on reimagining the classic secret-agent series.
Despite some fan concerns over early leaks and conceptual designs for Marvel’s Wolverine, the changes in leadership could signal a fresh creative vision for the game. Both Smith and Daly bring a proven track record from their work on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, raising hopes for a successful outcome.
Marvel’s Wolverine currently has no official release date, but it remains in active development for the PS5. Similarly, Perfect Dark continues to build anticipation as it aims to modernize a beloved franchise.
