The role-playing game Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has reached an impressive milestone, selling over one million copies worldwide across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Developed by Owlcat Games and released in December 2023, the game capitalized on the growing popularity of CRPGs, especially after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Despite initial technical hiccups, Owlcat’s commitment to refining the game post-launch turned it into one of the genre’s standout releases. On Steam, it has received a “Very Positive” rating from users. Critics have also lauded the game for its faithful adaptation of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and its complex character interaction.
In 2024, the game expanded with the Void Shadows DLC, which brought fresh content and enhanced the experience for fans. For 2025 a new expansion, Lex Imperialis, is planned which brings a new companion from the Adeptus Arbites, the Imperium’s police force.
Lex Imperialis is expected to introduce new regions to explore, innovative gameplay mechanics, and archetypes, as well as fearsome enemies from the Immaterium. Fans speculate which Chaos God’s forces might appear this time. Although no specific release date has been announced, more details will be revealed in the coming months.
Owlcat Games’ studio head, Oleg Shpilchevskiy, expressed gratitude and pride over the game’s achievement:

Together with the fantastic team at Warhammer, we created the CRPG of our dreams set in the grim dark future of the 41st millennium. We look forward to bringing more stories to the Warhammer universe.”
The growing popularity of Warhammer 40,000 likely contributed to the game’s success. Games Workshop’s efforts, including the success of Space Marine 2, have brought new fans into the Warhammer universe, many of whom might now be exploring the Koronus Expanse through Rogue Trader.
