At CES 2025, Lenovo unveiled its latest handheld gaming device, the Legion Go S, marking a significant milestone in portable gaming. This device will be the first third-party handheld to officially run Valve’s SteamOS, the same operating system powering the popular Steam Deck.
The Legion Go S, branded as “Powered by SteamOS,” offers gamers seamless access to their extensive Steam libraries. It is a lighter, refined version of Lenovo’s 2023 Legion Go, not a next-generation device.
What makes SteamOS unique is its simplicity. When users turn on their device, they’re immediately taken to their Steam library, with easy access to all their games, cloud saves, chat features, and recording capabilities. That’s why Steam Deck has garnered a dedicated following in the handheld market dominated by Nintendo’s Switch.
Valve isn’t stopping with just the Legion Go S either. The company has announced plans to release a beta version of SteamOS that will improve compatibility with other handheld devices. This means that users of various gaming handhelds might soon be able to download and test SteamOS on their devices.
For those concerned about being limited to just Steam games, Valve has also confirmed that users can still access desktop mode and install other game launchers and software. This flexibility, combined with the vast Steam library that’s already compatible thanks to Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, means players won’t have to compromise on their gaming choices.
