Multiple reliable sources have now confirmed that a Rayman remake is currently in development at Ubisoft. This news comes as a breath of fresh air for fans who have been waiting for over a decade since the release of Rayman Legends in 2013.
What Do We Know About the New Rayman Project?
According to reports from Insider Gaming, the unannounced Rayman remake is currently under development with the codename ‘Project Steambot’. The project is primarily being handled by Ubisoft Milan, a studio with an impressive track record of contributing to more than two dozen Ubisoft games over the past twenty years.
Kotaku also confirmed the news, and a Ubisoft representative told the outlet, “We are pleased to confirm Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand. The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later.”
This comes after reports emerged from a French journalist, earlier this, week, claiming that Ubisoft had shut down the team responsible for developing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Additionally, it was mentioned that some team members were also involved in a Rayman remake, casting doubt on the project’s future.
However, Insider Gaming now reported that around a dozen developers from the disbanded Prince of Persia team had moved on to other Ubisoft projects, with at least one member now working on the rumored Rayman remake.
Who’s Behind the Development?
Interestingly, Michel Ancel, the original creator of Rayman, has reportedly joined the project as a consultant.
This development has raised some eyebrows within the development team, particularly due to Ancel’s previous departure from Ubisoft in 2020 following allegations of toxic leadership – allegations which he strongly denied as “fake news”.
Since his departure, Ancel has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, though he paid tribute to Beyond Good & Evil 2 creative director Emile Morel, who passed away in 2023 at 40.
Beyond Good & Evil 2
Meanwhile, other developers from the Prince of Persia team have also shifted their focus to projects like Beyond Good & Evil 2 and the next Ghost Recon title.
Ubisoft Montpellier is reportedly continuing development on Beyond Good & Evil 2, a long-anticipated sequel to the 2003 sci-fi action-adventure classic, which was first announced in 2017.
The game’s ambitious design, featuring expansive planetary cities and space travel, was initially guided by Ancel and senior producer Guillaume Brunier, both of whom have since left the project. Development has since been handed over to Francis Coldeboeuf, an experienced producer who was already part of the core team.
Ubisoft also confirmed that Fawzi Mesmar, a seasoned game designer and creative director, has taken on the role of creative director for Beyond Good & Evil 2, building on the vision of the late Emile Morel.
Next Ghost Recon title
Earlier this year, rumors surfaced about the next Ghost Recon title, reportedly in development under the project name Ovr/Over. Insider Gaming claims the game is targeting a 2025-2026 release, and with added members from the disbanded Prince of Persia team, the developers are likely aiming to meet this timeline.
According to Insider Gaming, the game will be set during the fictional ‘Naiman War,’ marking a return to the first-person perspective for the Ghost Recon franchise.
The game is set to be a squad-based military tactical shooter, almost milsim-like in nature, drawing inspiration from leading first-person military games, including the Modern Warfare series, Battlefield, Squad, and Ready or Not.
