Bungie has unveiled the roadmap for Destiny 2, setting the stage for a bold new chapter in the iconic shooter franchise. Despite the challenges following The Final Shape expansion in Summer 2024—including financial struggles and staff layoffs—the developers remain committed to delivering an engaging experience for players.
A Shift to Biannual Expansions
Moving away from the traditional yearly expansion model, Bungie will now release two mid-sized expansions annually. In 2025, the first expansion, codenamed Apollo, is set to launch in Summer, followed by the second expansion, Behemoth, in Winter. It’s placeholder names, and their official titles will be revealed closer to their respective launch dates
Each expansion will introduce players to fresh narratives, immersive locations, engaging missions, new weapons, gear, raids, and dungeons.
Complementing these expansions will be four major updates, arriving with the start of each season: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. These updates will be free for all players and will come with seasonal content, quality-of-life improvements, and new features.
However, a Rewards Pass accompanying these updates will be a premium offering, providing additional perks and incentives.

Embracing Non-Linear Gameplay
One of the standout changes in Destiny 2’s 2025 roadmap is the shift towards a non-linear narrative structure. Bungie aims to give players more agency in how they experience the game’s story. According to narrative lead Alison Luhrs, players will have the freedom to choose their path after the Apollo expansion.
“In Codename: Apollo, our story unfolds across multiple threads. You might start at point A, but from there, you can decide whether to explore C, investigate B, or jump straight to D,” Luhrs explained.
This design philosophy aligns with open-world RPG experiences like Skyrim and The Witcher 3, offering players flexibility while preserving narrative depth. As the Light and Darkness Saga concludes, Bungie teases a new multi-year arc centered around character-driven adventures and the possibility of exploring territories beyond the Sol System.
Challenge Customization and the Feats System
Another significant addition in 2025 will be the introduction of a customizable Challenge System. This feature will let players adjust activity difficulty levels to match their skill, directly influencing the rewards they receive. Higher difficulty will yield more valuable rewards, while lower settings will offer modest incentives.
In tandem with this system, Bungie is introducing the Feats system. Inspired by the Skulls modifiers from Bungie’s Halo series, Feats will allow players to activate optional difficulty modifiers in activities like raids and dungeons. These modifiers will enhance challenge and reward players who rise to the occasion, adding replayability and excitement to high-stakes encounters.
A Pivotal Era for Destiny 2
With no sequel in sight, Bungie is doubling down on Destiny 2, signaling its intent to evolve the existing game instead of starting anew. Codenamed Frontiers, the upcoming saga will kick off with Apollo and continue through expansions like Arsenal and Surge.
While the roadmap lays out an exciting vision, the success of these plans will ultimately depend on their execution and the community’s reception.
