Unannounced Warhammer RPG Reportedly Cancelled After Years of Development

An unannounced Warhammer role-playing game (RPG), previously under development, has been canceled due to a withdrawal of funding by its publisher, according to reports from MP1st.

The project, internally described as a “multiplatform, social role-playing game,” was being developed by “Thought Pennies,” a studio founded in 2020 by Tim Erns, a veteran known for franchises like Star Wars and Final Fantasy. Development on the game reportedly began in 2022, using the powerful Unreal Engine 5.

Details of the Canceled Game

Although official information about the game was never released, LinkedIn profiles of Thought Pennie’s employees provided insights into what the title would have featured. It was designed as a third-person cooperative PvE (player-versus-environment) action RPG. Players would have controlled unique heroes, each with distinct playstyles, while engaging in a mix of melee and ranged combat. The game was set in a dark fantasy world teeming with monstrous enemies, adding to the signature Warhammer atmosphere.

The gameplay mechanics were described as advanced, including immersive elements like hit-pause effects, camera shake for combat impact, and detailed animations such as wall squeeze-through sequences.

Reasons for the Cancellation

The project faced significant challenges leading to its cancellation. Thought Pennies experienced multiple rounds of layoffs, with a particularly severe wave in late 2024 after the publisher decided to change its strategic direction and pull funding for the game. Despite receiving positive internal feedback on its development, the lack of financial support meant the studio could no longer proceed with the project.

Broader Industry Challenges

This news follows other recent cancellations in the gaming industry. Sony announced the termination of two unannounced multiplayer live-service games, one of which was reportedly linked to the God of War series. The struggles of Sony’s Concord were cited as a contributing factor to these decisions.

The Warhammer Franchise’s Resilience

While the cancellation of this RPG is disappointing, the Warhammer franchise continues to thrive. Recent successes include Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, which sold over six million copies and contributed to a 132% revenue growth for publisher Focus Entertainment’s parent company, PulluP Entertainment, in Q3 2025.

There are also several Warhammer projects in the pipeline, including a sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus and a massive MMORPG from Jackalyptic Games. Additionally, media expansions such as the Henry Cavill-led Warhammer series are in the works.

Recently, we saw an animated anthology series Secret Level which also featured a Warhammer episode titled “And They Shall Know No Fear.” The series is available on Prime Video.
