Ted Price Reveals Resistance 4 Was Proposed, but Sony Rejected the Pitch

Insomniac Games once pitched Resistance 4, but Sony ultimately decided not to move forward with the project. This revelation came from Insomniac’s founder and president, Ted Price, during a recent interview. While the Resistance series was a significant part of the PlayStation 3 era, the franchise has remained dormant since the release of Resistance: Burning Skies on PlayStation Vita in 2012.

Resistance: Fall of Man, the first game in the series, was part of the PlayStation 3’s launch lineup in 2006, alongside titles like Call of Duty 3 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. At the time, it was often compared to Halo, though it never quite reached the same level of success. Despite this, the game was well-received, leading to two mainline sequels—Resistance 2 in 2008 and Resistance 3 in 2011. After completing the trilogy, Insomniac shifted its focus to other projects, such as Sunset Overdrive and the Ratchet & Clank series.

During an appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Ted Price confirmed that Insomniac had proposed Resistance 4 to PlayStation, but the pitch was rejected. He explained, “We did pitch that one. It was a wonderful concept, and it just… in terms of timing and market opportunities, it didn’t work out. But it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further.

With Price set to step down as Insomniac’s CEO in March, he was asked whether he believes Resistance 4 could still happen. While there are no current plans, Price expressed his hopes for a revival. “All I can say is… honestly, I hope so. I would love to see the story taken further. It’s near and dear to my heart, and there are so many cool things about it,” he stated. However, given Insomniac’s current workload, a new Resistance game seems unlikely in the near future.

As of now, Insomniac remains focused on its lineup of upcoming titles. Reports from previous leaks suggest that the studio is working on several Marvel projects, including a Venom game, Spider-Man 3, and the highly anticipated Wolverine game. Additionally, rumors indicate that a new Ratchet & Clank game could be in development, leaving little room for a Resistance comeback anytime soon.

Resistance fans may be disappointed that the series remains on hold, but Price remains optimistic about its potential return. “Because [Insomniac is] part of Sony and Sony owns the intellectual property to Resistance, we will always have that opportunity to revisit Resistance,” he added. While there are no concrete plans, the possibility of a future entry in the beloved franchise remains open.
