The beloved farming and life simulation game Stardew Valley has officially surpassed 41 million copies sold across all platforms globally.
Since its initial release in 2016, Stardew Valley has won the hearts of millions. The game’s PC version remains its strongest platform, with over 26 million copies sold. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch version has also played a substantial role in its success, contributing approximately 7.9 million copies to the total sales figure. Although detailed sales figures for other platforms weren’t disclosed, it’s reasonable to assume that mobile versions account for a significant portion of the remaining 7.1 million copies.
In a gaming industry where paid expansions and microtransactions are commonplace, the game’s sole developer, Eric “ConcernedApe” Baronee remained committed to offering free updates and downloadable content (DLC). This dedication has fostered a loyal and appreciative fanbase.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Stardew Valley offers players an escape from busy city life to a charming countryside farm. Available on PC, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, and Android, the game provides an open-ended experience filled with farming, fishing, cooking, mining, and building relationships with the townsfolk. Multiplayer mode even allows players to team up with friends for shared adventures.
Barone has also been working on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier, but temporarily paused development to focus on polishing Stardew Valley. Despite years of updates and improvements, Barone has expressed that he still has countless ideas for the game and envisions its development continuing indefinitely.
The recent 1.6 update brought a wealth of new content, bug fixes, and improvements, further enhancing the player experience. While some issues arose post-update, Barone and his team swiftly addressed them with emergency patches across Xbox, PlayStation, and other platforms.
The game ranked in the top 100 Xbox games for 2024 according to GameInsights data and achieved the silver category (25th to 50th) on Steam’s Best-Selling Games in 2024. It is also featured on the top iPhone Paid Games and top iPad Paid Games lists among games like Minecraft and Monopoly.
Additionally, it was nominated for the Labor of Love award at the Steam Awards 2024, recognizing games that have nurtured their communities and continued to produce content long after their launch.
Inspired by its success, even Netflix’s new AI team is working on an AI-powered life simulation game similar to Stardew Valley.
