Square Enix, the company behind the popular Final Fantasy series, is taking a firm stand against harassment and intimidation of its employees. The Japanese video game publisher recently updated its Group Customer Harassment Policy to make it clear that it will take strong action against anyone who harasses or threatens its staff. This new policy confirms that Square Enix can withhold products and services from individuals who engage in such behavior and may even take “legal action when necessary.”

According to the updated policy, if Square Enix believes someone’s actions toward an employee or partner are harmful or beyond socially acceptable behavior, the company has the right to stop providing its services.

In cases where the harassment is severe or done with malicious intent, Square Enix will not hesitate to consult with the police or lawyers and may pursue legal or criminal proceedings.

The company also emphasized that harassment can take many forms, including violent actions, abusive language, threats, defamation, personal attacks (like harmful emails), discriminatory behavior, and sexual harassment. Even unreasonable demands for compensation or excessive requests for punishment of employees will be taken seriously.

The decision to update the policy and take a stronger stance comes after Square Enix recognized a growing problem with toxic behavior. Although the company remains open to receiving feedback, comments, and requests from customers, it pointed out that some individuals have crossed the line by directing harassment at its executives, employees, and partners.

Last year, a survey conducted at the 2023 Game Developers Conference (GDC) revealed that a significant majority of developers—91%—are concerned about harassment directed at their teams. Many companies, including Sony Santa Monica and Respawn, have also spoken out about the toxic behavior they have encountered from players, with Respawn particularly noting an increase in harassment towards its development staff.

Square Enix’s updated harassment policy signals that it will not tolerate harmful behavior and will take necessary steps to address it, whether that means denying access to services or pursuing legal action.
