Split Fiction, a new video game from the makers of It Takes Two, has smashed three Guinness World Records just weeks after its March 6, 2025 release.
The game quickly became a hit, pulling in nearly 200,000 players on Steam in just 24 hours. By March 28, Guinness World Records confirmed that Split Fiction had broken three records related to its local co-op features.
The game now holds the titles for “Most played local co-op video game on Steam,” “Most sold local co-op video game on Steam,” and “Most sold local co-op video game within one week of release.”
It sold 1 million copies in its first two days and 2 million in the first week, which is pretty impressive for a co-op game.
When the news broke, game director Josef Fares responded with a simple but heartfelt message: “Wow, this is a fun surprise. Thanks, everyone.” Fans jumped in to show their support, with one saying, “Thanks Josef for this Master Piece.”

Split Fiction tells the story of two writers, Zoe and Mio (named after Fares’s daughters), who get trapped in a machine designed to steal their creative ideas. Players work together to help these characters escape from their own stories.
What makes the game stand out is the contrast between the characters. Mio writes serious science fiction, while Zoe creates upbeat fantasy stories. Each character has unique abilities, giving players a reason to replay the game by switching roles.
Hazelight Studios, the Stockholm-based developer behind the game, has established itself as a leader in co-op gaming experiences. Their previous work includes Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, A Way Out, and the 2021’s Game award-winning It Takes Two.
One of Split Fiction’s cleverest features is the “Friend’s Pass” system. If you own the game, your friend doesn’t need to buy it to play with you—a smart move that makes co-op gaming more accessible.
Players can enjoy Split Fiction either locally (sharing a screen on the same console) or online with distant friends. The game works across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, allowing friends to play together regardless of their gaming platform.
