Sony has revealed its financial results for Q1 of fiscal year 2024, showing that 2.4 million PS5 consoles were sold during the period. This brings the total lifetime sales of the PS5 to an impressive 61.7 million units. However, the numbers reflect a drop of 900,000 units compared to the same quarter last year. Despite this decline, Sony reported significant growth in other sectors, including increased operating income and improved performance in game software and network services.
One of the standout performers was Sony’s network services division, with revenue hitting its highest point in a year, largely driven by the success of PlayStation Plus (PS Plus). However, software sales for both PS5 and PS4 titles saw a slight dip, falling by nearly two million units to 53.6 million in Q1 FY2024. Out of these sales, six million were first-party titles published directly by Sony. Interestingly, digital game purchases dominated physical sales, with digital copies accounting for 80% of all purchases made on PlayStation platforms.
In light of these results, Sony has revised its financial outlook for the gaming division, increasing its sales and operating income forecasts by three percent. While these adjustments signal cautious optimism, opinions on Sony’s performance remain divided.
According to Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki, the sharp decline in PS5 hardware sales could be concerning, as it suggests demand is slowing faster than anticipated. On the other hand, Christopher Dring from GamesIndustry.biz believes that strong sales of third-party games might still drive PS5 console sales, compensating for the relatively weaker first-party game lineup this year.
Industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto shared his perspective with VGC, describing the results as “quite solid” given the limited releases from PlayStation Studios this quarter. However, he pointed out that the year-over-year decline in hardware sales remains a notable weak spot. Toto emphasized that upcoming releases like Astro Bot could potentially reignite consumer interest in purchasing PS5 consoles.
Astro’s Playroom Sees Massive Player Surge Ahead of Astro Bot Release
In related news, Astro’s Playroom, the free PS5 pack-in title, has experienced a significant uptick in player activity. Data from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts, sourced via GameInsights, reveals a 66.79% increase in weekly players following the release of the game’s latest trophy update on August 2, 2024.
This spike comes just weeks ahead of the highly anticipated Astro Bot release on September 6, 2024. For the week ending August 4, 2024, Astro’s Playroom climbed to the 23rd spot on the PS5 game chart, surpassing popular titles such as Fall Guys, Among Us, and Call of Duty Black Ops III. This surge highlights Team Asobi’s successful strategy of using updates and new trophies to build excitement for Astro Bot‘s upcoming launch.
As anticipation for Astro Bot continues to build, it’s clear that Sony is relying on strategic game releases and updates to maintain momentum in its gaming division. Whether these efforts will translate into a rebound in hardware sales remains to be seen.
