Sony has formed a new in-house development team called Dark Outlaw Games, led by veteran game developer Jason Blundell. Unlike Sony’s typically publicized studio announcements, this news came to light through a podcast interview with Jeff Gerstmann, suggesting the studio is still in its early stages.
During the podcast, Blundell revealed: “I’ve had the amazing opportunity to create a new studio within PlayStation Studios for Sony. The studio is called Dark Outlaws Games.” He explained that his team has been “working away in the shadows for a while” and will make formal announcements “when we have something to talk about.”
Blundell specifically clarified that Dark Outlaw Games is a “new first-party studio” fully integrated within Sony’s PlayStation Studios structure. This distinguishes it from external partnerships Sony has formed for games like Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin on PlayStation 5.
According to Blundell, leading a new PlayStation first-party studio is a rare privilege. “Sony doesn’t start up first-party studios all the time, so to have that privilege is humbling,” he stated during the interview. The studio is currently expanding its team through an active hiring process, though development appears to be in the early phases.
Gaming enthusiasts may recognize Blundell from his influential work on Call of Duty: Black Ops, particularly his creative direction on the popular Zombies modes. He initially joined Sony’s ecosystem through Deviation Games, which formed a partnership with PlayStation in 2021 to develop a new intellectual property. While that particular project never materialized after Deviation Games closed, Blundell has continued his relationship with Sony in this new capacity.
Earlier this month, industry observers have noted job postings that might be connected to Dark Outlaw Games, potentially indicating development of a live service multiplayer game. However, these connections remain speculative as the studio maintains its low profile during early development.
The understated launch of Dark Outlaw Games represents an interesting shift from Sony’s typically more publicized studio announcements. As Blundell suggested in the interview, the team prefers to focus on creating something substantial before stepping “out into the light” with formal announcements about their projects.
