A widely used mod that allowed Bloodborne to run at 60 frames per second (FPS) has been taken down due to a DMCA request from Sony. Australian Twitch streamer and modder Lance McDonald, who developed the patch in 2020 and made it available for download in 2021, announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Sony Interactive Entertainment had requested the removal of all download links.
McDonald’s mod was designed to enhance Bloodborne’s performance by improving frame pacing and boosting its FPS to 60. When FromSoftware originally launched Bloodborne in 2015 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, the game was locked at 30 FPS, sometimes experiencing uneven frame pacing. Even with more powerful hardware, such as the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5’s backward compatibility, the frame rate remained unchanged, much to the frustration of fans.
The mod had gained significant attention within the “Soulsborne” community and was even featured in Digital Foundry, a well-known technology analysis group. The channel not only interviewed McDonald about his creation but also used the mod to demonstrate how Bloodborne could look in 4K resolution at 60 FPS on PS5 with AI upscaling technology.
The timing of Sony’s takedown has sparked speculation within the gaming community. With Bloodborne’s 10th anniversary approaching in 2025, some fans interpret this legal action as a potential sign of an upcoming official remaster or PC port announcement. However, no official confirmation has been provided.
For now, Bloodborne remains locked at 30 FPS on PlayStation consoles, just as it was when it first launched nearly a decade ago. So far, the game has sold over 7 million copies as a PlayStation 4 exclusive and maintains an impressive 91 average score on OpenCritic. The game is praised for its gameplay, atmosphere, sound design, Lovecraftian themes, and interconnected world design, often hailed as one of the greatest video games ever made.
