Konami‘s remake of the beloved psychological horror classic Silent Hill 2 has reached a major milestone, selling one million copies in just three days.
Released on October 8, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC, this remake—developed by Polish studio Bloober Team—has outpaced the original game’s sales. For comparison, the 2001 PlayStation 2 version took two months to reach one million copies sold and Pyramid Head creator Masahiro Ito said it “disappointing start”. This makes the Silent Hill 2 remake the fastest-selling Silent Hill game to date.
The remake has been well-received by both longtime fans and newcomers. Critics have praised Bloober Team’s respectful approach to the original, while successfully updating it for modern audiences. The game currently holds an impressive 86 Metascore on Metacritic, along with a user score of 9.3.
Silent Hill games had collectively sold only 9 million copies between the series’ launch in 1999 and the end of 2018. This means The Silent Hill 2 remake alone now accounts for 10% of all Silent Hill sales, making it one of the franchise’s best-selling titles. The original Silent Hill from 1999 still holds the top spot with over 2 million sales. However, given the explosive start of SE2, this position appears unlikely to last.
What’s New in the Remake?
The Silent Hill 2 remake brings several updates to the classic game:
- Overhauled visuals
- Improved combat system
- New over-the-shoulder camera angle (similar to recent Resident Evil remakes)
- New puzzles and redesigned maps
- Retained key narrative elements from the original
The Story Remains the Same
For those unfamiliar with Silent Hill 2, the game follows James Sunderland, who travels to the eerie town after receiving a letter from his deceased wife, Mary. Upon arrival, he finds the town nearly deserted and filled with grotesque monsters.
What’s Next for Silent Hill
This success is a promising start for Konami’s plan to revive the Silent Hill franchise. Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
1. More collaborations between Konami and Bloober Team
2. Other Silent Hill projects in development:
- Silent Hill Townfall (by NoCode)
- Silent Hill f (by NeoBards Entertainment), set in the 1960s Japanese countryside on a script written by Ryūkishi07 (When They Cry).
3. A film adaptation of Silent Hill 2 is also in the works
As of now, there’s no word on an Xbox Series X and S version. Given Sony’s history with exclusivity, it’s likely the game will remain a PlayStation 5 exclusive for at least a year.
With this successful launch, Konami might be considering remakes of other classic Silent Hill games.
