Sensor Tower has purchased market research company Video Game Insights (VGI) in a move that will add PC, PlayStation, and Xbox game data to its services. The deal, announced this week, brings together two companies that track how games perform across different platforms.
Video Game Insights has made its name by tracking Steam games – over 150,000 titles on the popular PC platform (Steam and Epic Games Store). They keep tabs on things like revenue, sales numbers, player counts, and wishlist trends. They’ve recently branched out to track console games too.
Many big game companies already use Video Game Insights’ data, including Krafton, Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, and Smilegate. Going forward, the company will be known as “Video Game Insights by Sensor Tower.”
Sensor Tower CEO Oliver Yeh highlighted how the deal expands their coverage across platforms. “Gaming is a significant part of the digital economy, and with this acquisition, Sensor Tower is excited to offer our customers gaming insights across mobile, PC, Xbox and PlayStation,” Yeh said.
The companies kept quiet about the financial details, but they’re clearly excited about the combined potential of their datasets.
Video Game Insights co-founder and CEO Karl Kontus shared his enthusiasm about the new partnership: “We are thrilled to join Sensor Tower and further our goal of providing the industry with a comprehensive view of the gaming ecosystem.” He believes the merged data will give customers deeper insights into market trends and player preferences, helping clients grow their businesses faster.
This move marks a significant expansion for Sensor Tower, which has mainly focused on mobile app/game data until now. By adding PC and console gaming information, they’re positioning themselves as a one-stop shop for gaming intelligence across all major platforms.
