A small indie game called “Schedule I” has become a massive hit on the Steam gaming platform.
This drug dealer simulator has quickly risen to the top of Steam’s best-seller list, outselling major titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, GTA 5, and Marvel Rivals.
Released just last week, Schedule I puts players in the role of a small-time drug dealer who can build up a criminal empire in the fictional city of Hyland Point. Players can manufacture and distribute various drugs, buy properties, run businesses, and hire employees.
The game was developed by a single person known as TVGS, or Tyler. On Reddit, Tyler expressed surprise at the game’s success, saying, “Honestly it’s amazing but pretty overwhelming. I never expected this kind of response!”
According to SteamDB data, Schedule I reached an impressive peak of over 414,166 concurrent players during the weekend. This number is high enough to place it among the top 30 most-played games ever on Steam. The game’s rapid growth is remarkable – starting with 115,000 players on its March 25 debut, then jumping double to 234,000 by March 28, 319,000 on March 29, and finally 414,000 on March 30.
While CS2 (Counter-Strike 2) still holds the overall top spot, Schedule I’s meteoric rise suggests it might eventually challenge for the sales crown, if not the player count record.
The game currently boasts a 98% positive review rating on Steam, with users praising its fun gameplay and multiplayer features.
The developer has been actively improving the game, with four post-launch patches already released to fix bugs and multiplayer issues.
Several other latest releases have also found success on Steam with R.E.P.O., Inzoi, The First Berserker: Khazan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Split Fiction fitting into the top 10 selling list. However, none have matched Schedule I’s explosive popularity.
Gaming experts attribute Schedule I’s rapid success to its viral spread across social media platforms like Twitch and YouTube, where content creators have been showcasing the game to their audiences.
While many viral games experience a short burst of popularity before fading away, Tyler plans to keep the momentum going with substantial content updates in the future. “At the moment I’m just trying to stay focussed and get patches out ASAP. Also looking forward to getting started on content updates as soon as all major bugs are patched,” Tyler added.
