Rocksteady Studios, the developer behind Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, has undergone another round of layoffs, marking the second wave of job cuts in just three months.
The layoffs occurred in late December 2024, leaving several employees from programming, artistry, and quality assurance (QA) teams without jobs. According to Eurogamer, at least six affected employees confirmed the news under anonymity to protect their careers.
This follows a similar wave of layoffs in September 2024, during which the company reduced its QA team from 33 to just 15 members. One employee even discovered they had been laid off while on paternity leave.
Warner Bros., the parent company of Rocksteady, has yet to issue a statement about these recent cuts, continuing its silence from the September layoffs.
2024 has been a challenging year for Rocksteady. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed to meet sales expectations, contributing to the studio’s struggles. Reports suggest that the game’s development faced numerous hurdles, including shifting visions, perfectionist leadership, and a lack of experience with multiplayer and live-service game formats.
The game’s disappointing performance reportedly resulted in a $200 million loss for Warner Bros. Despite this, Rocksteady continued to support the game’s post-launch content throughout 2024. However, in early December, the studio announced it would cease new updates for the game in 2025, though servers will remain online.
The layoffs at Rocksteady were not isolated. Warner Bros. Games Montreal, known for Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights, also cut 99 jobs in December, many of whom were working on additional content for Suicide Squad.
The past year has been particularly harsh for the gaming industry, with over 16,000 layoffs recorded in 2024.
