Resident Evil Re:Verse, the multiplayer component of Resident Evil Village, will permanently shut down on June 29, 2025, less than three years after its launch.
The game’s journey comes to an end despite Capcom claiming it had “exceeded expectations” since its release. Starting March 3, 2025, the game and all its downloadable content will be removed from digital stores across PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam platforms. However, players who already own the game can continue playing until the final shutdown in June.
According to Capcom’s official announcement, Re:Verse was created to celebrate the Resident Evil franchise’s 25th anniversary. The company believes the game has “served its celebratory purpose admirably” as the series moves toward a new direction. While the news might disappoint fans, those who have purchased RP Boosters or unlocked content through the Premium Pass can still enjoy these features until the servers go offline.
The multiplayer spin-off’s history has been rather tumultuous. The game initially faced multiple delays before finally launching in October 2022 alongside the Winters Expansion DLC for Resident Evil Village. This release came 17 months after Village’s initial debut, significantly later than planned.
Re:Verse offered a unique six-player deathmatch experience featuring iconic characters from throughout the Resident Evil series. Players could purchase various character skins, including Jill’s Battle Suit from Resident Evil 5, Chris’s Gun Show outfit, and Claire’s Leather Jacket from Resident Evil Revelations 2, among others.
The game’s reception was mixed to bad, with Opencritic score averaging at only 38. Some reviews highlighted promising concepts but most criticized the game’s balance issues, limited content, and aggressive monetization strategy.
Looking ahead, the Resident Evil franchise continues to thrive in other areas. The recent Resident Evil 4 remake has become the fastest-selling title in the series. Additionally, exciting news comes from Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, who confirmed last July that a new installment is currently in development.
For current Re:Verse players, Capcom has set up a dedicated support form to address any concerns about the shutdown. The company has also published a detailed FAQ addressing common questions about RP Boosters and Premium Pass content usage during the remaining service period.
This shutdown marks another live service failure in recent times after Concord, Suicide Squad Kill Justice League, Xdefient, and MultiVersus.
