Fans of Resident Evil have reason to be excited as a recent rating on the ESRB website suggests that Resident Evil 6 could soon arrive on current-generation consoles. The rating specifically mentions the game for the Xbox Series X|S, and while no official confirmation has been made, many speculate that it could launch on the PlayStation 5 and upcoming Switch 2 as well.
Originally released in October 2012 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Resident Evil 6 combined action and survival horror to create what Capcom described as an “epic and dramatic horror experience.” The game was later ported to Xbox One and PS4 in 2016, offering graphical enhancements and all previously released DLC. In 2019, the game was also made available on the Nintendo Switch, again with all additional content included.
This new rating strongly suggests we’re looking at a remaster rather than a complete remake, unlike the recent ground-up reconstructions of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. The description provided by the ESRB rating sheds light on what players can expect. It details third-person gameplay with a focus on battling zombies and mutated creatures using a variety of weapons, including pistols, knives, and explosives. The game’s mature content includes graphic depictions of violence, dismemberment, and profanity, aligning with the series’ survival-horror roots.
Although Resident Evil 6 initially received mixed reviews upon its release, it has since sold 13.8 million units as of September 2024, proving its enduring appeal.
It remains unclear if Capcom will also bring Resident Evil 5 to current-gen consoles alongside Resident Evil 6. Fans eagerly await further announcements from Capcom about the future of the franchise.
