Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake has reached an impressive milestone – 8 million copies sold!
Released in late March last year, the Resident Evil 4 remake quickly won over both longtime fans and newcomers. It’s a fresh take on one of the most beloved games in the series, bringing the 2005 classic into the current generation of gaming.
Capcom had already shown that it could handle remakes well with its successful updates of Resident Evil 2 and 3. But reimagining such a fan-favorite as Resident Evil 4 was a big challenge. Thankfully, they pulled it off (10/10 by IGN and 93 on Metacritic for PS5)!
The developer shared the news of this sales achievement on X (formerly Twitter), along with a celebratory piece of artwork featuring the main characters—Leon, Ashley, and Hunnigan—enjoying a day out together.
Speedy Sales
The game’s success was clear from the start. Within just two days of its release, it had already sold 3 million copies. Since then, it’s continued to climb the sales charts, becoming one of Capcom’s best-selling Resident Evil games.
While 8 million is impressive, it still has some catching up to do:
- Resident Evil 5: 14.4 million copies
- Resident Evil 2 remake: 13.9 million copies
- Resident Evil 7: Just under 14 million copies
- Original Resident Evil 4 (2005): Over 13 million copies
Notably, the remake is selling faster than some previous games. It’s expected to soon overtake the Resident Evil 3 remake, which has sold about 9 million copies to date. To be precise, as of May 2024, the Resident Evil 2 remake has sold 13.9 million units, while the Resident Evil 3 remake has reached 8.7 million sales.
Resident Evil Village, another hit in the series, managed to sell 10 million units within three years, setting a high bar for the franchise.
Overall Resident Evil franchises stand at a staggering 160 million total sales according to Capcom’s latest financial reports for Q1 of FY 2024-2025. Reports mentioned that the success of the Resident Evil 4 remake and Resident Evil Village are the driving factors.
