Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the upcoming God of War TV series adaptation, even though filming hasn’t yet begun on the first season. This news comes directly from newly appointed showrunner Ronald D. Moore.
During an interview on The Sackhoff Show podcast, Moore revealed his current involvement with the project. “Right now, I’m working on an adaptation of this video game called God of War – it’s a big title in the gaming world – that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they asked me to come in,” Moore said. “I’m literally in the writers room and working on that.”
The veteran television producer joined the creative team after previous showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus departed the project. Moore brings substantial experience to the series, having worked on acclaimed shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and most notably as showrunner for the 2000s reboot of Battlestar Galactica.
Moore admitted during the interview with former Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff that he isn’t a gamer himself. While he enjoys classic arcade games like Defender, Asteroids, and Centipede, he found modern controllers challenging. “I took a stab at it, but the controllers threw me,” Moore explained. “‘Press R1.’ Which one’s R1? Oh, I’m dead.”
Despite the change in leadership, God of War game director Cory Barlog remains attached to the TV adaptation as an executive producer. According to reports, the series will be based on the 2018 God of War game, which reimagined the franchise by placing protagonist Kratos in Norse mythology alongside his son Atreus.
The show’s production team includes several key figures from PlayStation and Santa Monica Studio. PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studios’ Yumi Yang and Jeff Ketcham, Sony’s Hermen Hulst, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee are all serving as executive producers alongside Barlog.
Amazon’s decision to order multiple seasons before a show premieres isn’t unprecedented. The streaming service has shown confidence in other video game adaptations, quickly renewing both the Fallout TV series and Secret Level after successful debuts. This strategy suggests Amazon has high expectations for the God of War adaptation and is committed to making it a flagship series for Prime Video.
The God of War series currently does not have a confirmed cast or premiere date.
